Psalm 91
I love sitting down with a passage of scripture and looking into the original language to see if there is anything I can pull out that makes the scripture come alive. I have been repeating Psalm 91 to myself often lately as I am constantly working to surrender my goals, dreams, plans and agenda to my Creator. Sometimes surrendering is easier to do than at other times. It thought I would show you what my journaling of scripture might look like. I also personalize it so that I becomes very real to me.
NIV – copied directly
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear…(the next verses from 6-13 give examples of what we don’t have to be afraid of.)
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
My journaling
1 If I make my home in the place where the God lives, I will remain in the protection or covering of the Almighty – Most Powerful God.
2 I will speak of the One True God, “He is my shelter where I am held secure, my God, in whom I put my trust.”
3 Yes, He will pull me out of the bait-layer’s trap and away from the sin of wickedness.
4 He will protect me with His wings and under His wings I will have hope; His firm and stable peace will be all around me as a shield (the kind that covers my entire body).
5 I won’t have to fear… (the next verses from 6-13 give examples of what we don’t have to be afraid of.)
14 The Lord says, “Because she has attached herself with to me, I will bring her into security. I will set her safely on high. Because she knows me.
15 She will cry out to me and I will answer. In times of trouble I will be with her, rescue her and promote her with honor.
16 With a long life I will fill her til she is over flowing – wanting nothing more and let her see my deliverance.”
I use Blue Letter Bible app to pull up either the word I want to study or the passage I am looking at. From there I use the dictionaries, concordances and commentaries to search the meaning of each word. Putting it all together makes scripture come alive and become more real to me.
